St. Augustine, Fla., a historic town boasting the oldest European settlement in the United States, made headlines in October for the devastating blow of Hurricane Matthew which flooded the town and its historic structures. But St. Augustine is open for business as usual and visitors shouldn’t be deterred from exploring the area.
Start your day at the National Monument Castillo de San Marcos, the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States. The remarkable structure boasts a rich history and costs $10 for adults to enter.
Next, stroll through the old town, just across the street from the fort. Stop in just about any restaurant for lunch — there’s something to satisfy any craving. One standout is La Herencia Café, whose Cuban sandwiches are filling and delicious. Budget around $15.
Spend your afternoon on a kayak or stand-up paddleboard; companies like Kayak St. Augustine or Anastasia Water Sports can outfit you. Reserve about $40.
For dinner, hit southern comfort seafood spot O’Steen’s, where your remaining $35 will be enough to fill up on deep-fried oysters, deviled crab patties and more.
