Under $100 / Europe

The industrial city of Manchester is undergoing something of a renaissance following a sharp decline.

International corporations such as the BBC have moved offices to the city, and a new generation of creatives is continuing a strong tradition of music and art.

Start your day in the famous Northern Quarter, with breakfast at Pen and Pencil. The exposed brickwork and metal fittings make for a hipster-ish environment, but the breakfasts are great ($15).

Set off on a stroll around the historic center of town, starting with the Victorian town hall. To get a better idea of the history of Manchester, head to the People’s History Museum and then on to the Museum of Science & Industry.

With a new appreciation for the contribution Manchester made to the development of the United Kingdom, it’s time for some lunch at Kabana. This authentic curry house is a real bargain, with great food served up at rock bottom prices ($14). The interior may be utilitarian but it’s the food that counts.

After lunch, head out to either the Etihad Stadium or Old Trafford to soak in some of Manchester’s rich football history. Two of the biggest clubs in the country, Manchester City and Manchester United, play on the outskirts of town, and the city lives and breathes football. Take a tour of either stadium depending on where your affections lie ($25).

For dinner, head to Iberica for some gourmet tapas ($35). Manchester’s culinary scene is exploding at the minute, and Iberica is a great example of the new wave.

After dinner head to Port Street Beer House for a craft beer to polish off your night ($5 each).
