A day well spent in paradise doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg if you know where to look. Luckily, some of the best activities in the scenic island of Maui, Hawaii, are low cost or absolutely free so you can spend more time enjoying paradise rather than fussing over finances.
Start your day with breakfast at locally loved Colleen’s at the Cannery in lush, upcountry Maui. Order the traditional French toast made with Hawaiian sweet bread and real maple syrup for $8.75, accompanied by a smoothie made with local fruit for $4.25.
Head east on the Hana Highway and take the short hike into Twin Falls, a free way to enjoy Maui’s unspoiled beauty. Make sure to grab a loaf of fresh-baked banana bread for the rest of your journey, usually $5.
Take a hike through the Hana Lava Tubes, a roughly 40-minute tour underground in a cavernous lava landscape for $11.95.
Technically part of Haleakala National Park, the $10 pass will grant you access to the seven-pool gulch popular for a picturesque swim.
Easily the best Thai food in Hawaii is a roadside shack in the middle of the jungle. Locally owned and operated, feast on the large plate of red curry with squash for $12.
Making your way back to the west side, stop at Maui’s Winery at Ulupalakua Ranch. Taste for free, but treat yourself to a bottle of Pineapple Sparkling Wine for $24.
Some say the best things in life are free and in South Maui on the hill between Big Beach and Little Beach, enjoy a spectacular Maui sunset, the best spot on island to see it, absolutely free.
