Located in Havre, Mont., is an underground city consisting of 1900s-themed shops and attractions. Everyday, the attraction hosts tours called “Havre Beneath the Streets” for travelers to experience life underground.
The city was originally built above ground in the 1900s, but, in 1904, there was a massive fire that affected 55 property owners and destroyed some of the businesses. The clever and creative folks of Havre decided to move the city underground and continue their lives that way. There was already development underground due to bootleggers. The citizens expanded on this and created a number of useable rooms, including a brothel, a saloon, Chinese laundry and an opium den. For years, the people used these underground rooms to continue businesses until they rebuilt what was burned in the fire.
Today, some of the rooms have been restored to their former glory and include items from that period as well. People are able to visit the underground town, learn about the history and take cool photos. The “Havre Beneath the Streets” tours are open Sunday–Saturday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.
