Tips / Destination

Winter solstice falls Dec. 21, and marks the longest night of the year.

In Alaska, that means there will be around five hours of sunlight. As a result, the phenomenon known as the Northern Lights is visible for the other 19 hours.

Nature’s spectacular light show is an increasingly popular tourist attraction for northern areas of the globe, and Alaska is no different. One of the best places to see the Northern Lights is at the Alyeska Resort.

The resort is just 40 miles outside the city of Anchorage, and includes the 301-room Hotel Alyeska. The luxurious surroundings make for the perfect spot from which to enjoy winter solstice in ultimate comfort.

Your time at the resort doesn’t have to coincide with winter solstice, but it is a special occasion. You could even spend a few extra days in town and stay for Christmas.

During the admittedly limited daylight hours there are a huge number of activities to keep you occupied. If you aren’t skiing or snowboarding, you can go dog sledding, ice climbing or snowmobiling.

If you do plan on visiting during the Alaskan winter, make sure you come prepared. Temperatures can fall as low as -10 degrees Celsius, so you will need proper cold weather gear!

Anchorage is well connected with the continental United States, with non-stop flights from major hubs such as Los Angeles (LAX) and Chicago (ORD).
