The Yucatan has miles and miles of coastline and great waters for all kinds of watersports.
Snorkel and diving fans should stick to the Caribbean coast, where the water is clearer and visibility is better. The Great Mayan Reef also stretches all the way down the coast to Belize and beyond, so there is lots of marine life to see, including turtles at the beach in Akumal.
You can also go cave diving in the many sinkholes, known as cenotes, which dot the landscape. The freshwater sinkholes are incredibly clear and you can see the ancient rock formations up close.
On the surface of the water you can take part in kitesurfing, paddle boarding and boogie boarding. Kitesurfing is particularly good around the Tulum area thanks to favorable winds, while you can paddle board along the coast and at the Bacalar lagoon. The small town of Bacalar is also popular with kayakers.
In many places there are boat tours that take you out for a day to snorkel at the reef, explore the lagoon or go fishing. The Yucatan is a paradise for those who like to be in the water and you’ll never be short of something to do.
