A violent separatist movement has marred the reputation of the Basque Country, but the region is incredibly tranquil and open to visitors these days.
The Basque people live in an area which spans a small part of southwest France and northern Spain. They have long been famous for the violent attacks of the ETA separatist group, but activities have now greatly diminished and shouldn’t deter you from visiting the region.
Bilbao is the largest city in the Basque country, and is home to an outpost of the Guggenheim art museum. It’s an architectural marvel and worth a visit as part of a couple of days in the vibrant city.
From Bilbao, head inland to Irun, a mountaintop village in the Pyrenees which offers a window into rural life. On your way up stop at some of the traditional Basque villages, and keep your eyes out for pelota courts, a traditional game a bit like a super-charged game of squash.
Heading up toward France, stop at San Sebastian, a delightful city set around a huge bay. After a dip in the sea check out the old town, a culinary hub for the region.
Over the border is the French city of Biarritz, once a spa town for wealthy Europeans but now a surfing mecca. The vibe is more bohemian these days, and you can easily rent a board to catch some waves.
Further inland is Bayonne, a foodie city with a strong culinary tradition. There is plenty more to see in seaside towns such as St. Jean de Luz, but these highlights will provide a flavor of the Basque country.
