A new study from Upgraded Points reveals upgrading to a first-class seat on your next flight may be more affordable than you think — and the study also shows where you can upgrade your next flight for the best deal.
The study looked at Google Flights data and airfare for economy and first-class seats on major airlines. It found if you want to upgrade from an economy ticket to a first-class seat, you’ll get your best deal, on average, with American Airlines, where the cost to upgrade is around $235.
In contrast, the most expensive upgrades could be found on Delta Air Lines flights; that said, the cost isn’t terribly expensive when you consider what you might be getting for the money. The average upgrade price with Delta is $284.55.
However, while these are average prices for upgrades, the actual cost for an upgrade can vary wildly, as the study also showed. For example, the study found, on one flight between Los Angeles (LAX) and San Francisco (SFO), the cost to upgrade was less than $100. Meanwhile, on one flight between New York City (JFK) and Los Angeles (LAX), the cost of an upgrade was more than $650.
