Where To Experience A White Christmas?

For many Europeans, the probability of experiencing a white Christmas has declined dramatically in recent decades, but there are a huge number of places where you can experience one. The traditional image of Christmas taking place under a blanket of snow is more of a marketing tool than a reality in many European cities. The idea of a white Christmas holds a special place in the collective imagination, and some people are willing to travel to experience one.

In the United Kingdom, snow is extremely rare, and is even less likely during the festive period. Snow is far more common in Scandinavia, and the Norwegian capital of Oslo offers great snow infrastructure and myriad activities to keep you entertained.

If notoriously expensive Oslo is beyond your budget, try the charming Estonian capital of Tallinn. A criminally underappreciated destination at the best of times, Tallinn is even better at Christmas and it won’t blow a hole in your bank balance.

Another more affordable destination is Prague, the Czech capital, which traditionally sees snow around the holiday season. Alternatively if you are looking to splash out and meet celebrities and royalty from around the world, the Swiss resort of St. Moritz offers amazing skiing and luxurious surroundings in which to enjoy Christmas.

The Russian cities of Saint Petersburg and Moscow are renowned for their beauty during the winter, and travelers should not be put off by the political situation. In fact, the cost of visiting Russia is falling, and this winter is a perfect time to visit.
