Tips / Destination

Florida isn’t exactly world renowned for its surfing, at least not in the way Hawai’i, Australia and California are. But the state’s beaches offer gentle waves great for beginners — or anyone not wanting to risk getting bashed against volcanic rocks or rolled in a massive break.

Among the best surf spots are near Cocoa Beach, on the state’s east coast. Head just south of town to Surf City, where you’ll find some of the best surfers in the state. And Cocoa Beach itself, home to the Ron Jon Surf Shop and the hometown of famous pro surfer Kelly Slater, has a great mellow surf scene, along with plenty of places to take lessons if you’re just learning.

There’s also Satellite Beach on the East Coast, where pro surfers regularly hang out. And at New Smyrna Inlet, there’s a break called “wave magnet” that draws surf enthusiasts from around the state.

More great options include Ponce Inlet, one of the state’s best, and Daytona Beach, though surfing is more regulated here due to its popularity. Winter is a great time to surf the breaks near the Main Street Pier.

And Flagler Beach offers great options, also near the pier here.
