Tips / Travel

For plenty of people, myself included, one of the pleasures of traveling is sampling some of the local beers.

In recent years, craft brews have undergone a huge surge in popularity, while around the world local breweries are coming up with new and interesting beers which mean you will never get bored.

Within the U.S. borders, there are some amazing beer festivals going on, not least in Boston with the Extreme Beer Fest. As you may have realized from the name, brewers are encouraged to bring their strangest concoctions to see what the public thinks.

Up in Victoria, Canada, the Great Canadian Beer Festival is held on Sept. 9 and 10. More than 8,000 visitors sip on brews from around the world at Canada’s longest-running craft-beer only festival.

Over the pond in London, the Great British Beer Festival is held in August every year. It lays claim to being the World’s Biggest Pub, with more than 50,000 attendees and beers from across Europe and the United States, as well as Britain.

Belgium has arguably the strongest beer culture in Europe, and the most interesting range of brews from this tiny country will be on show at the Leuven Innovation Beer Festival in De Hoorn. The event is hosted each May in the brewing hall where Stella Artois was first created, and welcomes innovative brewers from across the country and beyond.

A list of beer festivals wouldn’t be complete without the legendary Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany. Each year the usually conservative Bavarian city really lets its hair down to celebrate the strong brewing tradition of the area, and gets dressed up in traditional lederhosen.
