Hordes of apps are hitting the travel market that boast the ability to scout out WiFi connections all over the world. For travelers who absolutely must stay plugged into their mobile world, one such app is Wiffinity, which searches for the nearest WiFi hotspot and provides log-in information.
Travelers who download the free app to their mobile phone (iOS and Android devices) can view an interactive, GPS-powered map that shows users where they can find the closest connection. If a user is in a café or other public space where WiFi is accessible and has not yet been discovered by Wiffinity, users can add the hotspot to the program to make it accessible for other users.
WiFi hunters can rest assured hotspot information provided by Wiffinity is secure and they do not have to risk sharing private information with other connectors. The app does not require any data usage so travelers will not have to worry about expensive roaming fees.
Developed by a start-up technology company in Spain, the app is currently available throughout Europe, South America and Central America, with plans to expand to other countries. With more than 600,000 worldwide hotspots registered with Wiffinity, and counting, a free WiFi connection is probably just around the corner.
