Dubbed “the land of the long white cloud” by the ancient Maori people, the Marlborough region in New Zealand boasts stunning natural beauty in the form of rolling green vineyards and sun-drenched coasts.
The region has become a mecca for food and wine lovers, with the first modern winery opening in Marlborough in 1977, followed by 120 more. The region produces 90 percent of the country’s Sauvignon Blanc vines, and 76 percent of New Zealand’s total wine production can be traced to the region.
There are so many wineries and vineyards worth visiting in the region, but here are five to get you started.
Brancott Estate boasts a tasting room located on a hill overlooking the original vineyards. Learn about the history of winemaking in the region and enjoy a tasting or have dinner.
Cloudy Bay, known for its Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling, was founded in 1985 as one of the first five wineries in the Marlborough region. Cloudy Bay is an internationally acclaimed brand, and the vineyard offers a luxurious tasting experience.
Fromm Winery, famous for its Syrah and Pinot Noir, has crafted distinctive wines since 1992. The vineyard is renowned for its combination of old-world winemaking skills and techniques with new-world innovation in the production of its wines.
Nautilus Estate, an early winery in the region, founded in 1985, is known for its Cuvee Brut NV, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay, all of celebrated for their perfect food-pairing ability. The small, family-run winery is a must-visit.
Yealands Estate is a newer addition to the Marlborough wine scene, established in 2008. Known for its Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Tempranillo, Yealands is an award-winning, eco-friendly vineyard offering delicious wines and breathtaking views of the Cook Strait.
There are also several bike tour companies, such as Wine Tours by Bike and Bike 2 Wine, that let visitors cycle through the picturesque countryside to different vineyards.
