Compasses have become somewhat like novelty items, with every watch, smartphone and keychain incorporating one. But those compasses are almost completely useless without certain functions and elements, so buyer beware.

When buying a compass, consider the following:

  • Buy a compass close to where you’ll be using it, as it will be properly adjusted for your spot on the globe. Or, buy a compass with a global needle, which can be used anywhere in the world.
  • Consider elements like a mirror to give better sight lines, and a clinometer for mountaineering and backcountry skiing.
  • Compasses with lanyards are a great tool, as the string can be used to measure distance on a map. Just make sure your lanyard isn’t made of stretchy material.
  • Buy a compass with a clear ruler component, also helpful for use with a map
  • If you plan to use detailed maps or have eyesight issues, some compasses come with a small mirror to help you better detect map features and markings.
  • Declination adjustment aspects are necessary, as this is how you delineate true north from magnetic north.
