How to Avoid Frostbite

Safety

Nothing ruins outdoor winter activities faster than the onset of frostbite. This condition can affect exposed skin in minutes if temperatures are below freezing and leave lasting damage to cells. Follow these tips to keep Old Man Winter at bay.

Dress in multiple layers and use thermal fabrics for extended outdoor activities. Wear a wicking fabric close to the body to prevent trapped sweat and add warmth. Bulkier layers, such as a thick wool sweater, fit best further from the body. Make sure your outermost layer is waterproof.

Frostbite usually affects uncovered skin and is most common in the face, hands and feet. Make sure to protect these areas in warm, dry layers — hats, gloves, thermal socks and mittens — are a simple, yet effective way to combat the cold. Making small changes, such as wearing a hat with earflaps or mittens instead of gloves, will help your body retain heat.

Make sure to monitor yourself and others for signs of frostbite, such as numbness or a loss of sensation. Take frequent breaks to “warm up” in a heated location to minimize your risk of frostbite. Avoid “braving the cold” if you are having difficulty acclimating to the outdoors after being inside.

While there is no formula to prevent frostbite, it is important to take precautions and dress for the climate. Enjoy the beauty of winter safely and make sure to seek medical attention if frostbite is serious.
