The days of luxurious flights complete with dining rooms and pianos are long gone, but some airlines maintain a semblance of in-air luxury. Here are five of the best airline bars at which to enjoy in-flight drinks.
The Celestial Bar, on the top deck of the airline’s Airbus A380, is the product of a long-standing partnership with Absolut. All cocktails are vodka-based, made to order and served with a rotating mix of canapés and desserts. In keeping with the name, the bar’s décor features shimmering wallpaper patterned with small lights to emulate the night sky.
Last summer, Virgin Australia introduced a new bar on board its flagship Boeing 777-300ERs, which fly from Los Angeles (LAX) to Sydney (SYD), Melbourne (MEL) and Brisbane (BNE). The Bar is set between the two business-class cabins at the entrance to the aircraft, boasting a backlit white counter and leaf-patterned ceiling. In addition to cocktails, passengers can take a seat at the bar in the morning and enjoy breakfast and a Nespresso coffee from a machine custom built for high-altitude brewing.
The bar on board Virgin Atlantic’s Boeing 787 Dreamliners offers a swanky nightclub vibe, though it’s smaller and is only available in the airline’s Upper Class cabin. The bar features burnished chrome accents, ambient lighting and a seasonal, rotating menu of cocktails.
Etihad’s Lobby is a self-service lounge for first- and business-class passengers aboard the airline’s Airbus A380s. It’s designed with Emirati accents and features Poltona Frau leather banquettes, each equipped with power outlets, fold-down armrests and work surfaces. While there is no bartender, there are flight attendants on hand to provide snacks and pour drinks.
If you find yourself in Qatar Airways’ first or business class, take advantage of the airline’s beautiful spacious lounge located between the two cabins. The bar features signature beverages, including Krug Champagne, snacks and entertainment.
