Top 5 / North America

It’s abundantly clear to visitors of Kaua’i’s Waimea Canyon why it’s been nicknamed the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. Similar to Arizona’s natural wonder, the Hawai’ian version is a network of colorful valleys plunging toward the Waimea River, some 3,500 feet from the canyon’s ledges.

Hikes here range from multiday backpacking adventures to shorter, easier day hikes.

Iliau Nature Loop

Among the easier options are the Iliau Nature Loop, an easy 0.3-mile loop that visits endemic plants like the eponymous iliau, and offers views of the canyon and its waterfalls.

The Kukui Trail

The Kukui Trail switchbacks and drops 2,000 feet in 2.5 miles down to the river; you can also hike just one mile down for a great canyon view.

Koai’e Canyon Trail

The Koai’e Canyon Trail is a moderate three-mile option accessible a half mile along the Waimea Canyon Trail, visiting lovely swimming holes.

Waimea Canyon Trail

The Waimea Canyon Trail treks 11.5 miles one way along the bottom of the canyon, fording the river several times. While flat, the trail can be wet and buggy, and you’ll need a permit to access it.

Koke’e State Park

Nearby trails snake into the adjacent Koke’e State Park, where you can access parts of the Na Pali Coast, also famous for its dramatic scenery. Try the Alaka’i Swamp Trail, which leads through an otherworldly forest.
