Despite its history, Detroit is not the best place for techno compared to cities like London and Berlin. The genre has a small (but dedicated) following in the Motor City, but most of the town’s residents go to a bar on the weekend instead of a club.
This changes for one weekend every year, when about 100,000 people congregate in Hart Plaza in the center of Detroit for Movement Music Festival, a celebration of all things electronic music. The event is held over Memorial Day Weekend, featuring three days of DJs, live acts and vocal performers.
For Americans, it’s rare to see a lineup quite as packed as this one. While most underground electronic artists are relegated to the side stage at EDC, techno is front and center here, bringing more than 100 artists to six different stages, including a few special ones curated by Red Bull Music Academy, Resident Advisor and Detroit Yoga Lab (yoga rave anyone?). The latter is presented on the Made in Detroit stage, featuring homegrown talent.
Carl Cox is set to helm Monday’s closing night performance. Richie Hawtin will close the first night on Saturday, while Sunday will feature a special performance by deadmau5 under his techno alias, testpilot. Other performers include Kevin Saunderson, Josh Wink, Seth Troxler, Adam Beyer, Larry Heard, Terrence Dixon and many more.
