Under $100 / Europe

It has never been more affordable to travel to Europe. Croatia — a recent addition to the European Union — is one of the continent´s most affordable places to visit. Nestled on the edge of the Adriatic Sea is Dubrovnik, a town that earned its nickname as the Pearl of the Adriatic. Home to castles, fortresses and delectable seafood, a day in Dubrovnik won´t set you back too many kuna.

Start your day at the open-air market in Gundulic Square where fruits, vegetables and flowers are sold. Sip a coffee and a pastry while marveling at the vendors´ sales skills.

After breakfast, spend a few hours navigating the cobblestone streets and alleyways of the Old City. Although it may feel a bit touristy, it is not difficult to imagine the city from hundreds of years ago when horses trotted along the centuries-old stones.

When hunger strikes, head to Barba for a quick meal of Croatian street food. Fried seafood platters, burgers and oysters can be enjoyed in the restaurant or ordered to-go for a seaside picnic.

Nothing beats a sunset over the Adriatic. Expensive restaurants offer patios that overlook the sea, but a quick ride in the cable car ($8.90) or a fairly challenging 90-minute hike up to the top of Mount Srd will provide even better views. Purchase some provisions while still at sea level to enjoy a hilltop picnic.
