Under $100 / North America

The small seaside town of Akumal is famous for its sea turtle population, and it’s a great stop off on the Riviera Maya.

Head for breakfast at Turtle Bay Café, where you can choose from breakfast plates or baked goods such as the incredible cinnamon buns. You’ll have to arrive early if you want to try one, though: Locals swoop in every morning to snap them up (breakfast $7).

Take out a snorkel and go for a swim in the famous bay to see the turtles and other marine animals that live on the reef (snorkel hire $5). Relax on the sand for a while before eating lunch at the Lol-Ha Restaurant just behind the beach.

In the afternoon, take a walk along the coast road to visit the cenote at Yal-ku. Swim in the cenote and explore the local area before walking back along the beach to La Buena Vida. Climb up to the treehouse to drink a beer as the sun goes down ($2 per bottle) and then order dinner ($15) from the extensive menu. It’s such an atmospheric spot you’ll want to stay all night before heading back to your accommodation for a well-earned rest.
