Under $100 / North America

If you’re visiting Aspen, Colo., for skiing you likely already know it’s not going to happen for less than $100, but there are plenty of things to do in the Colorado Rocky town besides skiing.

The charming mountain destination offers year-round, inexpensive outdoor activities as well as affordable places to eat, drink and relax.

Rising more than 1,400 feet, the twin peaks of Maroon Bells offer great hiking and wildlife watching with beautiful vistas, campgrounds and trails of varying degrees of difficulty. You can visit Maroon Bells free of charge, but if you drive there’s a $10 vehicle fee. Bus transport is $6.

If you have a car, take the 20-mile drive through Independence Pass, the highest scenic road in North America, which meanders 12,095 feet above sea level. The breathtaking drive stretches through forests and along cliff sides, offering stopping points along the way to capture the views.

Hop on the Silver Queen Gondola, which travels 2.5 miles from the heart of Aspen to the 11,000-foot summit of Aspen Mountain. The ride is $21 but is worth it for the views at the top. At the summit you can hike, dine and enjoy live music.

For food, the best bang for your buck is New York Pizza, Paradise Bakery and Café, 520 Grill, CP Burger and Grateful Deli. For some budget-friendly entertainment, visit Aspen Brewing Company, HOPS Culture, Nest Public House at Viceroy and Belly Up, Aspen.

Roaring Fork Transportation Authority offers a free bus service within Aspect and Snowmass Village and inexpensive paid service to surrounding communities including Basalt, El Jebel, Carbondale, Glenwood Spring and Rifle. A bike-share system is also available.
