Under $100 / North America

Situated in northern Michigan, with 60 miles of shoreline and ample opportunities for outdoor adventure, Benzie County is a perfect destination for active travel.

Start your day with breakfast at the Crescent Bakery. The donuts are made fresh daily and you can also pick up a beautiful box of macarons, cookies, muffins, fritters or more. Located in an adorable downtown location, in a historic, white brick building with vibrant purple trim, you can’t miss it.

Take a morning hike or bike ride through some of the county’s best scenery. The Betsie Valley Trail is 22 miles stretching between Frankfort and Thompsonville. The Betsie River Pathway is a relatively easy trail that goes through Pere Marquette State Forest. Some of the more popular include the 5.8-mile Lake Ann Pathway, an easy forest trail with great views of the water and bogs. If you’d like a little culture interspersed throughout your wilderness, maybe go for a stroll at Michigan Legacy Art Park, where more than 50 sculptures sit on 30 acres.

Grab lunch at a local hole-in-the-wall — Dinghy’s Restaurant. Fresh and local menu items include the restaurant’s famous on-site smoked meats. The award-winning St. Louis-cut pork ribs are served either wet or dry. Get there before they run out!

If you travel to Benzie County during the month of May, you can take advantage of the morel mushroom hunting season, from late April through the end of the month. Popular hunting spots include the forests, riverbeds and fields. The county’s tourism board provides a handy morel mushroom hunting guide.

If the weather’s not ideal and you’d like to head indoors, you can find quite a few art galleries in the county. Ellie Harold Fine Art, Focus Gallery, Sleeping Bear Gallery and the historic studio of Gwen Frostic are some of the favorites.

Wind up your day with a brew and dinner at Stormcloud Brewing Company. Just two blocks from the waterfront, the brewery specializes in Belgian ales, while the kitchen focuses on flatbread pizzas, small plates and specialty popcorn, with ingredients grown on-site or sourced from nearby farms. In the summer, the patio and lawn provide space for lawn games and live music; in the winter, the patio bleachers are a great spot to watch curling on the outdoor sheet, or even take a curling lesson yourself.
