Under $100 / Europe

The coastal town of Cascais hugs a southwestern border of Portugal, framed by the Tagus River to the south and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. Approximately one hour by train or car from the center of Lisbon proper, the resort town offers visitors a more relaxed look into Portuguese life, if that’s even possible.

Pick up a signature Portuguese pastry (pastel de nata) at Nata Lisboa, where you also can fuel for the day with a cup of strong Portuguese coffee. Spend the morning wandering the tiny streets of central Cascais, with a stop in the Jardim Visconde da Luz for a quick ride on the carousel and a few minutes of lazing in the glorious sun.

For a simple yet filling lunch that feels like you’re dining in the home of a local, head to A Nova Estrela for a wide variety of Mediterranean and European dishes for the budget traveler.

In the afternoon, choose from a handful of Cascais beaches, each with a unique personality and distinct charm. For a more thrilling natural experience, grab a local bus up to Sintra-Cascais National Park for some strenuous hiking, or westward to Cabo de Roca to stand on the cliffs of the westernmost point in continental Europe. If you’d rather stay closer to central Cascais, the Boca do Inferno cliffs do the coastline justice with an intricate cave open for boat tours.

After a day of exploring the region’s natural wonders, take yourself out for a delectable dinner of fresh seafood, Portuguese flavors and (most importantly) local wine at Taberna Clandestina in the heart of Cascais.
