Under $100 / North America

Evanston is the suburb on the lake right over Chicago’s northern border and it is worth a daytrip if you have time to spare. There is a lot to do and settling on a day’s worth of activities won’t be hard. Founded in the mid-19th century, Evanston was a wealthy enclave from the start and if you are a voyeur who loves to ogle other people’s houses, this is an hours-long, free activity in and of itself. The mansions date back to the early 19th century and are gorgeous and vary in architectural styles. Continue this historic house tour with a visit to the Dawes house ($10).

But, before you even start the day, grab a coffee and pastry at Brothers K coffee shop ($10). Main Street offers the usual shopping, but spend the day with a historic house tour, or, if weather permits, hang out at the beach and enjoy Lake Michigan. Travel a little north by car and visit the Bahai Temple. This is a beautiful architectural landmark that is one of its kind in North America.

There are a number of restaurants to try, but grab a drink and dinner at the Whiskey Thief Tavern ($50). In the evening, check out what’s playing at the Piven Theater. Tickets can be had for around $20. If you are enjoying the big city for longer than a few days, a daytrip to Evanston might be a brief respite from the excitement of city living.
