Under $100 / Europe

The Bay of Kotor is quickly becoming a highlight on the Adriatic coast thanks to its easy access for cruise ships and its captivating mountains that rise from the water’s edge. Kotor, an ancient city on the southeastern side of the bay, is an old-world, walled city that graces the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites. Well-preserved cobblestone walkways and stone bridges make this photo-worthy spot a lovely stop along the Balkan coastline.

Start your day with breakfast from any of the number of sidewalk cafes, where €5 gets you a cup of coffee and a pastry of your choosing.

Once caffeinated, strap on your walking shoes for a steep climb to the hilltop fortress. You can either enter the path of stairs directly from the old city and pay a small entry fee of €3, or you can exit through the northeastern gate of the city, turn right and proceed along the inclined, zigzag path to the top, free of charge. Once at the top, views of the bay and the mountains unfold. Pack a snack and a few drinks to rest among the fortress ruins and admire the city below before descending the hundreds of stairs back to the old city.

The afternoon can easily be spent strolling through the streets within the city’s walls or sampling fruit and veggies at the outdoor market just outside the city’s walls. Alternatively, seek air conditioning at Kamelija, a mall-like shopping center with a full supermarket inside.

As the sun begins to set over old Kotor, make your way to Skala Santa for an authentic yet affordable dinner. Share the seafood platter for two for fresh catches caught the same day, and sample a white wine made from grapes only found in Montenegro.
