Get in the Gold Medal spirit in Lake Placid in the Adirondacks, host of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Games, with a variety of outdoor activities and awesomeadventures. But first, fuel up for the day with breakfast at Saranac Sourdough, serving delicious, hearth-baked sourdough creations like sourdough pancakes ($5.95) in a converted log cabin. The legacy of the 1980 Olympic Games has been preserved by the New York State Legislature’s creation of the Olympic Regional Development Authority, which ensures public enjoyment of the Olympic venues. Learn about events such as the legendary “Miracle on Ice” hockey game in 1980 at the Lake Placid Olympic Museum. Open daily, museum admission costs $7.

For lunch, enjoy a farm-to-table dining experience at the on-mountain J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines Café at the base lodge of Whiteface Mountain, offering chef’s salads, paninis and delicious French cheese platters ($17.95), as well as great views of the resort. Warm up with cups of Belgian hot chocolate ($3) or hot mulled wine ($7).

 

Head to the trails to take in the calm of the Adirondack woods and explore some of the most beautiful terrain in the east while cross-country skiing at Mt. Van Hoevenberg. Rates for a cross-country trail pass start from $20 for one day, with rentals for cross-country skis or snowshoes costing $18.

 

When the sun goes down, enjoy moonlight skating at the original skating oval from the 1932 Olympic Games at Whiteface Mountain. Rates for the indoor or outdoor public skating rinks cost $8 for adults. Bring your own skates or rent there for $3.

 

For dinner, visit Liquids and Solids, offering a farm-to-fork menu boasting unique entrees like spaghetti squash and gnocchi with sherry cream, dates and brown butter vinaigrette for $15.
