Under $100 / Europe

A large city in southern Sweden, Linköping is a central cultural region in the country, founded more than 700 years ago.

Start your day off with breakfast and artisan coffee at Simons Rosteri & Bageri. A popular spot, you can find baked goods, pastries, salads, sandwiches and more, alongside impeccably prepared hot beverages.

Visit one of the area’s primary attractions, Linköping Cathedral. Drawing worshipers for more than 800 years, the architecture began in 1230 and is the most impressive and expensively built Swedish church from the Middle Ages. Entrance is free and a daily tour is provided at 11 a.m.

Datamuseet IT-ceum, or the Swedish Computer Museum, presents exhibits on the country’s IT history. Beyond focusing on the past, it also puts an eye toward the future, with educational resources addressing research and more. Open every day until 4 p.m., or 8 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, tickets come to less than $10 USD.

Grab a light lunch at Babettes, another cafe serving up sandwiches, burgers and salads for lunch, as well as some vegetarian and vegan options. The homey atmosphere provides the perfect spot to refuel before heading out into town again.

A short drive out of the city’s center, an afternoon of historic exploration awaits at Ekenäs Slott, a 17th-century castle where, depending on the season, you can find tours, jousting, ghost tours or a Christmas market. Tours are less than $10, but only offered in Swedish, though you can get some English reading material and follow along.

Grab dinner at Bistro Esperanza, a still-active sailboat that also hosts a bistro and bar. For less than $30, you can enjoy a fresh, locally sourced dinner, with entrees from both land and sea, as well as vegetarian options.
