Under $100 / Africa

Lusaka is quickly becoming one of the hottest destinations on the African continent. The capital city of Zambia is bustling with energy and boasts a modern and cosmopolitan appeal with a rich nightlife, top-notch dining and a plethora of things to see and do.

Begin your morning with a quick bite at The Zambean Coffee Co., for delicious coffee and a hefty sampling of biscuits and eggs before heading off on your adventure. Order wisely and you should get a good meal for less than $15.

Take a short drive outside of the city to visit Munda Wanga, a wildlife park and sanctuary that houses more than 45 species of animals endemic to the African continent. Entrance fees for adults are 25 kwacha, less than $1. They also offer fun, hands-on, educational tours, waterslides and other fun activities.

You’ll spend most of your morning at the park, so head back into the city when you’re ready for lunch. The Mint Lounge is a popular restaurant known mostly for its smoothies and healthy burgers. It’s a tad pricey, like most food in town, so be prepared to drop around $20.

Start your afternoon with a quick trip to the Lusaka National Museum. The building tells the history of the city and is broken up into four separate areas, which each highlight different parts of the local culture, including arts, maps and even witchcraft. Entrance is only a couple of dollars.

Next, a stop at the Soweto Market will give you great insight into local life and grant you the opportunity to mingle with the citizens. There are tons of crafts and food here, but be prepared to haggle. Save $20 for souvenirs.

Finally, end your day with a delicious dinner at Four Seasons Bistro. It’s owned and operated by Jamey Townsend, who competed on the Zambian Masterchef, and sources most of the ingredients locally. The tilapia fish cakes are a must-have. Splurge a little and throw down $30 for a meal.
