On the edge of the Atlantic Ocean lies a chain of islands called the Outer Banks, North Carolina’s coastal paradise of tranquil beach towns and copious opportunities for relaxation. Approximately six miles from the north end at Kill Devil Hills to the south end just before Cape Hatteras, the stretch of island is lined with sandy beaches to the east and a placid inlet to the west.
A breezy Nags Head morning starts with a cup of coffee and a pastry at Front Porch Café, followed by a trip to the beach to catch a few early-morning waves or some sun rays before the influx of vacationers who booked family cottages along the sands. If the weather isn’t cooperating, head indoors to the shops at Outer Banks Mall and visit the Cotton Gin, an OBX outpost with home goods, handmade clothing and candles galore.
After a picnic lunch on the beach, head to the Wright Brothers National Memorial, the point from which the brothers executed the first successful take-off in a plane.
Pop in for dinner at the Blue Moon Beach Grill for mouthwatering (and reasonably priced) plates of fresh seafood, vegetarian dishes and locally brewed beer. Round out the day with a hike to the top of Jockey’s Ridge, a massive sand dune that faces west and sets the perfect scene for a sandy sunset.
