Under $100 / Latin America

Paramaribo is often found near the bottom of most traveler’s to-visit lists, if it’s even there at all, which is quite a shame because the city has much to offer. If you’re spending the day here it’s easy to do it on a dime.

In the morning, stop by Anthony’s Corner for a quick bite to eat or a healthy sandwich for less than $10. Once you’re full, make your way over to Fort Zeelandia. It’s one of the city’s most historical sites and provides great insight into life in the area before modernization, and entrance is usually free.

Next, stop by the Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral to stare in awe at the architecture. Guests are free to have a look around, but don’t hesitate to drop in a little cash, say $10, to help them keep the place up.

Head over to Roopram at lunchtime for some classic Surname roti, easily the best in town. A meal here will run you around $15.

In the afternoon, feel free to check out both the Peperpot Nature Park and nearby Waterant. Both places are free to explore, but you’ll probably end up plunking down a few bucks on souvenirs and snacks. Save $30 for this adventure.

The Presidential Palace is a great final touring spot for the day and, if you’re lucky enough to find it open to the public, a fascinating look into the local government. Entrance is free.

For dinner, check out Squeezy Hot Pot for some of the city’s best soup. Unless it takes a lot to fill you up, a meal here should only cost around $20.
