Under $100 / Europe

While Santorini and Mykonos have their fair share of island charms, the smaller Greek island of Paros boasts unparalleled natural beauty and a more quaint and authentic Mediterranean cultural experience.

Paros is a Greek island located in the heart of the Aegean Sea, best known for its beaches and traditional villages, including Naoussa, Parikia and Lefkes. Each charming village boasts traditional Cycladic architecture, whitewashed houses and blue-domed churches, all with stunning views of the sea.

Wherever you go, you’ll find several beaches, all known for cerulean water and golden sands. Each beach on the island is different from the last, so it’s worth your time to visit more than one.

On the north coast is Kolimbithres, a beach where naturally sculpted rocks form peaceful swimming coves. If you’re seeking more of a thrill, head to the southeast coast to Drios for water sports, especially wind surfing, and great beach bars and clubs.

While the island’s natural beauty and outdoor activities could easily fill your time in Paros, there are several historic landmarks throughout the different villages worth visiting.

Parikia is home to the Panagia Ekatontapiliani, a landmark Byzantine church from the fourth century. The old town area of Parikia is considered the largest in the Cyclades Islands, where you’ll find charming, untouched alleyways and in Lefkes village, there are several great taverns and cafés.

In Naoussa, in front of the port, is a unique Venetian castle from the 15th century. The castle is half sunken beneath the surface of the sea, a remarkable sight.

Being an island, great food for little cost is easy to come by. You’ll find small taverns and waterfront cafés in every village along the coast.

Naoussa, the old fishing village, is characterized by its Venetian port and many great fish restaurants, where you can enjoy a delicious, fresh meal for little cost. Don’t forget to stop in one of many Ouzeri to try the Gouna fish and octopus.

For a fun night out, Parikia is a great option with several lively bars and clubs, like Entropy Bar, Jazz Bar and Resalto Bar, home to some of the best music in Paros.

Getting around the island is not difficult or expensive. There is a bus service between the towns with frequent departures during the higher travel seasons. The price for a daily ticket is usually around $8 or $9. Boat trips are always a cheap option, and there are rental motorbikes, ATVs and bicycles available.
