Under $100 / Europe

Just across the Germany-Austria border lies the quaint town of Salzburg, Austria. The birthplace of Mozart makes for a splendid daytrip from nearby Munich or Innsbruck. Although Salzburg can be heavily populated with hordes of tourists, the sprawling cobblestone streets and isolated fortress make it easy to escape the crowds for an affordable and scenic visit.

Austria´s café culture is such that it requires a seat and a forum in which to socialize. Rather than grabbing a takeaway latte, rest in Café Tomaselli with a sweet cake and a cup of coffee for less than €4 ($4.50).

Properly caffeinated, climb toward the hilltop Hohensalzburg Fortress for a steep-yet-brief ascent to the top. The walk is approximately 15 to 20 minutes, or alternatively the funicular takes groups to the top in two minutes. Dating to the 11th century, the views from the top look out to the town of Salzburg, the Salzach River and the majestic Alps in the distance. Entrance to the fortress starts at €12 ($13.60), which includes a funicular ride, but views of the town can be adored for free with a leisurely stroll around the perimeter of the fortress.

After working up an appetite, return to the Old Town for a filling lunch of schnitzel and potatoes at Restaurant Schachlwirt.

The quaint streets of Old Town Salzburg provide a perfect afternoon for strolling and window-shopping. Pop into Salzburg Cathedral (donation optional) for stunning examples of intricate Baroque architecture. Round out your afternoon of action with a visit to Mirabell Palace and Gardens to dance where the Von Trapp family did in the film The Sound of Music.
