River cruises as a means of luxury travel have grown in popularity in recent years as they provide an opportunity to float along the countryside while stopping and sightseeing at notable cities and towns along the way. Historically popular among older travelers, river cruises are now targeting families by offering adjoining rooms in their cabins so larger groups can spread out but still stay connected. With an average lower income than aged travelers, the younger generation will soon be able to partake in more budget-friendly river cruises along the Mekong, Ganges and Amazon Rivers.
Cruise lines also plan to attract more active travelers. Some ships that will debut in 2016 will feature cycling-themed cruises with on-land cycling excursions during the day, while others explore the world of yoga by offering daily classes on board. River cruises are no longer about sleeping, eating and sightseeing.
