Standing in front of a crowded room and delivering a speech that is both entertaining and heartfelt is a tough task. You want to make people laugh, but you don’t want to say something that’ll turn things awkward.

Here are a few tips on crafting the perfect best man’s speech at your buddy’s wedding.

Keep the jokes light

A great speech is equals parts funny and heartwarming. You definitely don’t want to fill your speech with nothing but jokes. Maybe toss two or three good ones in, but don’t make it one endless story about how your friend behaved in college.

Don’t embarrass your friend

It’s okay to take a lighthearted jab at your best buddy, but it’s not such a great idea to talk about his adventures at your favorite strip club in front of his bride’s family. He has to deal with these people for the rest of his life and you don’t want to make that any harder than it already is.

Get input from friends

Before giving your speech in front of the guests, have some of your friends go over it with you. They’ll be able to point out if you’re trying too hard to be funny and save you from potential embarrassment and some of the most awkward moments of your life.

Don’t ramble on

Keep your speech short, unless you’re a great storyteller. Nobody wants to hear someone who doesn’t have the gift of gab going on and on for minutes. That’s why it’s important to plan ahead and try to keep the speech from going off on a tangent.
