For extended travels, eating at restaurants can get quite expensive and are not feasible if you plan on going into the wilderness. That doesn’t mean you can’t do some quality cooking on your own, thanks to the growing popularity of sous vide (French for under vacuum), which involves cooking a meal in a sealed bag with a heated water bath.

Though it was originally discovered as the best way to prepare foie gras, even PETA advocates will appreciate how easy and flavorful this technique can be. For people outdoors or stuck in a hostel with no stove, Anova’s Precision Cooker allows people to make gourmet meals with just a pot and electrical outlet. Simply fill a resealable bag with your favorite recipe (similar to a slow cooker), clip it to the edge of a pot filled with water and set the time and temperature on the cooker (which clips itself to the pot).

The device is similar to a water boiler, only this one is much more precise, allowing you to adjust the temperature by a half degree. You can change the settings with a dial or with an app, convenient for those longer, slow-cooked meals. The results will rival even the most experienced chef, retaining all the juice and flavor of your recipe thanks to the sealed bag. For best results, empty the bag onto a pan for a final sear and crispy outer layer.
