While you may associate Kansas City with barbecue, the city offers more to traveling foodies than just ribs and brisket. The destination recently received a range of James Beard Award nominations, including several for best chef in the Midwest, best emerging chef, outstanding wine and beverage program, and outstanding bar.

So, where should you go to taste these potential award winners for yourself?
Restaurants with chefs in the running for best in the Midwest include The Town Company, located in Hotel Kansas City and offering a small-plate, locally focused menu; Chewology, a Taiwanese restaurant with a street food slant; and Westport Café, a French bistro.
The Campground received a nomination for Chef Jeff Workman. Located in the Stockyards District, the vibe is rustic and nostalgic, and focuses on hunted, fished and foraged ingredients.
Receiving a nomination for its wine and beverage program, Affare is a modern German restaurant. A tasting menu is available alongside a seasonal menu and seasonal cocktail menu. The carefully curated wine list only features sustainably farmed wines.

Then, to round out your taste of Kansas City’s best dining, Drastic Measures received a nomination for outstanding bar for the second year in a row. The cocktail lounge only serves cocktails, no wine or beer, with options like the Culture Club, made with goat cheese-washed tequila, macerated strawberries and lemon; and the College Dropout, made with balsam fir gin, lime, absinthe and cane sugar.
