Macau’s history as a Portuguese colony means its cuisine includes a mixture of Portuguese dishes as well as Chinese cuisine. Dishes adopted by the Portuguese on their global escapades have also landed in Macau. Add to that a vibrant street food scene and a visit to this Special Administrative Region of China is a feast for the palate. Among the must-try foods are:
Portuguese Egg Tarts
Arguably Macau’s most famous food, these three-bite treats consist of pastry shells filled with an incredibly rich custard bruleed on top. You’ll find these throughout the city, but the best are at Lord Stow’s in downtown Coloane.
Pork Chop Bun
Another street snack, these sandwiches generally consist of a bone-in chop on a warm roll. Street food vendors sell these everywhere, with many popping up near the Ruins of St. Paul.
Pork Jerky
Shiny stacks of sweet pork jerky are ubiquitous in Macau, and it’s easy to get a sample to figure out exactly which flavor is your favorite.
Almond Cookies
A bit sandy in texture and nutty in flavor, these are also ever-present in Macau, with samples abounding. Koi Kee Bakery is a well-known producer.
