LGBTQIA+

While Mumbai might be a cultural hotspot in India, it’s still outside of the Western hemisphere meaning caution should be taken at all times when it comes to public displays of affection among LGBT men and women.

Having said that, there are plenty of opportunities for you to cut loose in this beautiful city.

If nightlife is what you’re looking for, head over to the popular Voodoo on Saturday night. Though not officially a gay club, it does host something of a gay night on the weekends. You can also stay up to date on the latest gay meet-ups in Mumbai on the website Gay Bombay.

During the spring if you find yourself in the city, you can also attend the largest (possibly only) gay film festival in Mumbai, the Kashish Mumbai International Queer Film Festival. Started in 2010, the festival takes place each year now sometime in April or May, so be sure to check before you arrive.

Shopping opportunities abound in Mumbai, but the only official “gay” retailer is D’kloset, which bills itself as India’s first gay fashion store. For book lovers, there’s Queer Ink Bookstore.

Homosexuality was recriminalized in India in 2013, so when you’re traveling in Mumbai it’s important to respect the laws and not engage in any activity that could land you in jail. Be safe, be yourself, but also be smart.
