There are plenty of options to choose from when it comes to an island getaway in Cambodia, but Koh Rong is easily the most popular. Getting there is an easy task with plenty of boats making the trip from Sihanoukville throughout the day for roughly $20. The boat trip is pleasant enough, but hot.
Once I arrived on the island, I was rounded up with other passengers at a beachside bar right near the docks. We were given the rundown about safety measures and places to stay.

There are two options for which beach to stay on — the main beach where you’ll dock or on the opposite side of the island at Long Beach. The main beach is party central and home to numerous hostels and bars. It gets a little crazy there but is great for those looking to party. I stayed on Long Beach where there are more expensive hotels and bungalows but peace and quiet (and a better beach!).
The hosts were lovely and the other people staying on the island were fun to be around. We were fed authentic Cambodian dishes each day and an employee of the bungalows I stayed in took us on tours around the island to see waterfalls and sea life that glows in the dark.

The only downside was electricity is a scarce commodity, so it’s lights out early in the evening and you’ll have to rely on a flashlight if you get up in the night for a bathroom break.
Overall, Koh Rong was a great experience and is easily one of my favorite destinations in all of Southeast Asia.
