One of the best cities in the world for a day under $100 is Phnom Penh. Aside from it being inexpensive, the Penh is just starting to get into its groove-building back a city after genocide takes some time — and the Cambodian culture is really beginning to emerge.
Acclimate yourself with the city by starting in Lakeside at Simone Bistrot & Art for their breakfast special that changes, but includes some variation of scrambled eggs, fresh baguette, tomato salad, fruit compote and coffee or juice for only $6.
Following breakfast, walk the streets to see graffiti art used as an effort to clean up the area from when the Boeung Kak Lake was drained.
Grab a moto ($2) and head to Spa Samata for one of their essential oil (or plain) treatments (around $20). Spa visits are a must in Southeast Asia.
Head to ARTillery Cafe nearby and try their Mediterranean Quinoa Salad for lunch ($5.50). Wander the gallery and then grab a buddy to catch a Khmer Architecture Tour by cyclo. Be sure to call in advance to reserve ($30).
For a true Phnom Penh experience, you can’t miss the dizzying Psar Tuol Tom Pong, or Russian Market. Wander the aisles for as long as you can bear the heat or until it closes at 5 p.m.
Get a tuk tuk ($3) to the FCC for a view of the river and the popular espresso martini at happy hour ($4). Then head to Laughing Fat Man for traditional fish amok and a laugh with the owner ($5).
The only way to conclude a day in Phnom Penh is with a party boat cruise along the Tonle Sap River ($15). Shared between friends, this should only put you back a couple bucks and what’s a party without people?
