Located just outside the city limits of Washington, D.C., the small city of Bethesda, Md., is almost a carbon copy of D.C., in terms of its restaurants, shops and affluence. However, Bethesda has its own gems that help it stand apart from the nation’s capital.

Start your day in Bethesda’s “uptown” area off Woodmont Avenue where shops and restaurants can keep you busy for hours. Grab a hearty sandwich for less than $8 at Taylor Gourmet, and treat yourself to a famous Georgetown Cupcake for dessert ($3.25 for one cupcake).

In the afternoon, take a stroll through Cabin John Regional Park where there are playgrounds for children and running trails for you and your pup. Art lovers must stop by Waverly Street Gallery where paintings, jewelry and photography exhibits are on display.
