Tips / Travel

Budget travelers have the world at their fingertips as the travel landscape becomes more affordable and less complicated. Thanks to home exchanges, now it is possible to avoid accommodation fees altogether. Swapping apartments with a couple in a faraway land may put you in your dream vacation destination for free, so long as you open your home to the exchangers either simultaneously or at a later date.

When arranging a home exchange on the Internet, some websites offer free swaps while others provide memberships so those seeking the arrangement are slightly more serious and trustworthy. As with any exchange of service, especially opening your home to a stranger, ample communication before the exchange is key. Plan your exchange many months in advance, and try to be as flexible as possible with dates to make yourself a more desirable swap candidate.

If you haven’t done so already, it is wise to invest in renter’s insurance to protect your home and your valuables. Asking for references before the exchange is also a good way to know who you will be letting in. Be sure your temporary tenants know how to operate your appliances, navigate your neighborhood, and contact neighbors or in-town friends in case of an emergency. Also communicate to them the areas they are allowed to access and whether there are any cabinets or closets that are off limits.

As you spend time in your temporary home, treat the place the way you would want the exchangers to treat your space. Keep it clean, obey any agreed-upon rules and be sure to thank the hosts by leaving a token of your appreciation such as a bouquet of flowers or a bottle of wine.
