St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland Versus South Boston

The ancient story of the Saint who brought Catholicism to Ireland and drove all of the snakes out may not sound like a way to start a party, but thanks to Dublin it, is.

The three-day festival is filled with drinking Guinness, live music and dancing leading up to the pinnacle of the entire event: the St. Patrick’s Day parade. Beginning at noon, the green-clad participants and players parade from St. Patrick’s Cathedral to the Black Church while crowds of people look on and participate in festivities. The spectacle can be observed from anywhere, but primarily O’Connell Street Bridge, which is famous for having the best view.

The streets will be jam packed with people and dancing, so driving on the day is impossible. Travelers should find accommodations within walking distance.

South Boston is known for their party celebrating St. Patrick almost as famously as in Ireland. With such strong roots in Irish heritage, Boston has a lot to offer in terms of Irish culture with authentic music dancing, Irish pubs and street fare.

On March 20, Boston throws one of the greatest Irish parties of the year with about 1 million people in attendance. Being the second largest St. Patrick’s Day parade, just after NYC, this event does not disappoint.
