Tips / Safety

Traveling alone can be a frightening experience, especially for first timers. Logistics, getting lost and personal safety are all issues solo travelers face. Regarding safety, use some of the following tips to ensure you have a safe and memorable experience on your first solo trip abroad.

When reserving your accommodation, scout out the neighborhood and try to book a place in a busy neighborhood with a lot of amenities. For safety’s sake, book a place with a reception desk, ideally one open 24 hours per day.

Obtaining multiple copies of insurance documents and identification cards is a must. Keep one with you at all times and the other in your hotel. Notify friends of your travel plans, including sending electronic copies of your flight itinerary and any planned excursions.

Solo travelers have to be slightly more aware of their surroundings so as not to attract attention to themselves. Use a map and plan your route from the safety of your hotel room and walk with confidence as you make your way through an unfamiliar destination.

Last but not least, use common sense. If a road or a person or a place does not feel right, use your best judgment to redirect yourself to a more comfortable environment.
