Under $100 / North America

Situated on California’s rugged central coastline, Monterey is a scenic and historic destination in the Golden State. Explore the breathtaking natural landscapes and cultural attractions of this coastal town.

Start your day with a stroll or a jog along the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail. The 18-mile paved path passes by many of Monterey’s most popular attractions. Next, enjoy breakfast at the Old Monterey Café. A favorite among locals, the family-owned and -operated restaurant serves up diner-style breakfast dishes starting at about $10.

A visit to Monterey isn’t complete without a stop at the historic Cannery Row. The waterfront street was once home to many now-defunct sardine-canning factories. John Steinbeck wrote of this section of Monterey in his 1945 novel Cannery Row. Now, the area is home to hotels, restaurants and boutiques. Stop by A Taste of Monterey for a sampling of some of the area’s best wines. A wine flight starts at $10. Located on Municipal Wharf, overlooking the ocean, LouLou’s Griddle in the Middle is a great lunch spot known for hearty seafood. Their clam chowder is a standout. Lunch costs about $15.

Visit the Monterey Museum of Art. The museum is split into two locations: Pacific Street and La Mirada. Adult admission costs $10.

The Monterey peninsula is home to many great Mexican restaurants. For a one-of-a-kind experience, have dinner at El Cantaro. The restaurant offers a vegan spin on Mexican classics. Tacos cost less than $5.

Have a nightcap at the nautically themed pub, The Crown & Anchor. Sit at the bar and choose from 20 international beers on tap, or step outside to the full-service patio. Spend $8–12.
