Wedding trends seem to pop up every day and flood Pinterest feeds with the latest ingenious way to style frosting on a cake. From the flowers to the music to the bride´s dress, newly engaged couples (or engagement hopefuls) are constantly browsing the Web for the most inventive and creative ways to make their big day different. One trend that is anything but new involves hand painting the bride’s wedding dress for a truly unique and one-of-a-kind gown for the big day.

Hand-painted wedding dresses originated in Podhale, Poland, a town in the southern part of the country steeped in tradition and folk culture.

Local brides find inspiration for the painted designs from flower arrangements and nature found throughout the town; interior design features in homes and local buildings; or from authentic embroidery passed along for generations. Once the brides communicate their visions to the artists, the painters use modern fabric paint to decorate the white dresses.

Floral designs are usually printed on the groom’s clothing, as well, so that on the special day, the couple complements each other. Traditional groom garb features a thick coat worn over the shoulders (without the sleeves) and a round-brimmed hat.

Inspired by Polish folklore, the trend can easily transcend to other cultures as brides strive for individuality.
