Situated on the southern coast of the Mediterranean island of Malta, Marsaxlokk was once a sleepy fishing village that saw few visitors. But due to its postcard-perfect harbor in which multicolored fishing boats bob and offer daily boat tours around the coast, Marsaxlokk increased in interest among foreign visitors. The town features a promenade that stretches from one end of the harbor to the other, where copious restaurant tout the “best fish in town.” But one such restaurant sees fewer patrons due to its location at the tail end of the promenade, contributing to the aura of dining at a Maltese gem.

The battle for fresh seafood typically begins at Marsaxlokk’s weekly market each Sunday, where fishermen sell catches to the bevvy of harborfront restaurants. Terrone uses this fresh protein to create myriad dishes that showcase the best of Maltese and Italian flavors. If you’re lucky enough to grab a table on the patio, you’ll have a front-row seat to the weekly market, and also a permanent sunbathing spot as Terrone’s patio faces west and soaks up sunlight latest in the day compared with other Marsaxlokk restaurants that face south.

Terrone’s menu features a list of tasting plates meant to be shared, such as local snapper Carpaccio, freshly shucked oysters, grilled Mediterranean langoustine and local red mullet, stuffed with breadcrumbs and herbs. Terrone also serves larger plates such as local rabbit (a Maltese specialty) stuffed with sausage and wrapped with pancetta, and a Sicilian fish stew that pays homage to Malta’s neighbor to the north.

Round out the meal with something sweet, like homemade tiramisu served in a stem-less martini glass, or vanilla and amaretto panna cotta served with local pomegranates. As the sun sets over the harbor, savor your glass of local wine and appreciate the freshness of Maltese seafood.
