Unlike its more popular neighbor, Trinidad, the small city of Cienfuegos never struggles to deal with the amount of visitors it receives.
Take a relaxed breakfast at Casa del Batido, with milkshakes and simple dishes to set you up for the day ahead ($4). Take a walk along the Malecon to get your bearings and have a look at the kitsch Palacio del Valle and the Catedral de la Purisima Concepcion.
Stop in at La Fernandina second-hand bookshop to see if you can pick up any rare treasures, and then go for lunch at Paladar Ache ($15). Get stuck into the fresh seafood and sip on a couple of beers before a quick wander around the Museo Provincial ($2) in the afternoon.
As evening draws in, take a seat at Patio de ARTex. There are nightly performances of traditional Cuban music, and things can get pretty lively. If you get peckish, go to Dona Nora for dinner ($20) and a nightcap at Teatro Café Terry. There is more live music to be had here, and the cocktails are great.
If you want to stay out, go back to Patio de ARTex, open until 2 a.m., or El Palatino ($3 per cocktail).
