Tips / Travel

A trip abroad can mean a chance to disconnect from your everyday life and leave worries and stresses behind (at least temporarily), but there are instances when checking in with friends and family back home may be necessary, especially if traveling solo or visiting more remote areas of the world. Here are the best ways to stay in touch when outside of the country.

Download WhatsApp

Although Americans are somewhat new to the game, every other country has been using WhatsApp for years in place of standard text messaging. All you need is a decent internet connection and you can send texts, voice notes and even make voice and video calls using the app.

Schedule Phone Calls

If you’re hopping across time zones but still want to stay connected to people back home, it may be worth scheduling time in both of your calendars to take a break and have a catch-up chat. Pick a time that works for both schedules and find somewhere quiet with a good internet connection for a quick chat on WhatsApp (see above) or Skype.

Agree on a Check-In Schedule

If you’re visiting remote areas where internet connection isn’t always guaranteed, inform your loved ones of the situation but assure them you’ll check in when you can. This can alleviate the fears of worrying family members who are accustomed to hearing from you on a daily basis.
