Jackrabbit Filly Review

On a recent trip to Charleston, my group and I decided to have dinner at Jackrabbit Filly. The restaurant serves new Chinese-American cuisine with a southern flair. We booked reservations as the popular spot fills up fast. Jackrabbit Filly opened in 2019 and has since appeared on numerous regional and national best-of lists.

We arrived in time for our reservations and the hostess seated us outside on the patio. Our waiter came out shortly after we were seated and gave us notice in advance that, since they were busy, service could be slow. We all decided on drinks from the unique cocktail list while we perused the food menu.

Our friend dined at Jackrabbit Filly before. She suggested sharing everything family-style, given the sizing of the dishes. The restaurant clearly denotes food allergies in each dish. We appreciated this, as we had a shellfish allergy in our group.

We ordered a variety of dishes and our waiter advised they would be served as ready. Up first, fish tartare with ponzu, spicy mayo and a side of garlic bread. We devoured this dish and all remarked how we never thought to pair fish tartare with garlic bread. The unique combination worked well and was everyone’s favorite dish. Next, we split chilled cucumbers with fried peanuts, wasabi dressing and chili oil. The vegetable dish was a refreshing early course. We then had pork and cabbage dumplings with soy sauce, vinegar, chili oil, cilantro and peanuts. We ordered two orders of Japanese fried chicken (karaage), one with lemon, mayo and ponzu, and a spicy version with chili oil. The spicy version wasn’t as spicy as I expected, but it packed enough heat for my liking. Our side of garlic Brussels sprouts came out next. The last course was ramen noodles with a sweet and spicy mushroom sauce and we added pork.

Everything was flavorful and unique. Jackrabbit Filly is a must when visiting Charleston.
